gNewt's license is LGPL ( GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE).

gNewt is a gtk+-based window and widget library designed for writing applications with a simple, but user-friendly, interface under X window. gNewt provides the same feature set as newt does. It means that gNewt is not intended to develop an application with a complexe user interface.
Supported programming languages are C, Python, TCL, Shell Script and Perl.

The first goal of gNewt is to be compatible with newt.

Newt programs that are dynamicaly linked to newt, can be dynamicaly linked to gNewt without recompilation by setting the LD_PRELOAD environmental variable.

Whiptail scripts can also take full adventage of gNewt.
